Names Shane Ray and Alex Rodriguez Co-Artistic Directors

SAN FRANCISCO — February 12, 2020 — Ray of Light Theatre, San Francisco’s non-profit musical theatre company, today announced its 2020/2021 season featuring the re-imagining of some of the company’s most popular female-led productions in celebration of its twentieth anniversary. The 2020/2021 season includes the return of the all-female cast of LIZZIE for a one-night only concert performance, mainstage productions of Heathers: The Musical and CARRIE the Musical. Ray of Light Theatre will also host its first-ever gala fundraiser featuring performances by the all-female cast of Jesus Christ Superstar (2018). Heathers and CARRIE will mark Ray of Light’s move to new performance venues, Z Space and A.C.T.’s The Strand, enabling the company to continue delivering on the high-quality production value it has become known for while offering an improved patron experience.

Ray of Light Theatre also announced a new executive leadership team going into its twentieth year. Founding artistic director, Shane Ray, and Alex Rodriguez will lead the company as co-artistic directors, replacing Jason Hoover after his masterful ten-year run as artistic director. Longtime staff members, Sara Altier and Jessica Coker Mohr have been named managing director and general manager, respectively. The four, who between them have produced theatre for Bay Area audiences for more than five decades, embody the Ray of Light ethos of Blood. Sweat. Musicals. and are committed to fostering the company’s mission and vision for the evolving needs of San Francisco audiences.

“For twenty years, audiences have come to Ray of Light Theatre for bold productions that push boundaries, inform and excite. It’s been an honor to share the Ray of Light stage with Bay Area artists since moving to San Francisco over a decade ago, but it’s my greatest privilege to take on this new role with a company that has become my home,” said Alex Rodriguez, co-artistic director. “The girls are back for our twentieth anniversary season, and I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off this new era for Ray of Light than with these female-led shows.”

“Ray of Light Theatre started in a school gymnasium among friends who wanted more musical theatre in San Francisco, and twenty years later we are readying ourselves to produce our most ambitious season and move into Z Space and The Strand, two venerable San Francisco performance spaces. It’s great to be back with the company in this formal role, and to partner with Alex Rodriguez as we shepherd Ray of Light into its next chapter,” said Shane Ray, co-artistic director. “I also want to thank Jason Hoover for shaping Ray of Light into the company it is today, solidifying our foothold in the Bay Area theatre community these last ten years and setting us up for continued success.”

LIZZIE in Concert

Music by Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer and Alan Stevens Hewitt

Lyrics by Steven Cheslik-DeMeyer and Tim Maner

Book by Tim Maner

Summer 2020 – One Night Only!

Back by popular demand (no, really, check our email inboxes), America’s favorite axe-wielding double-murderess comes to the Ray of Light stage for this one-night concert to kick off our twentieth season. LIZZIE imagines the story behind the legend Lizzie Borden — the primary suspect for her father and stepmother’s brutal murder in 1892 — with a cast of four powerhouse women. This show melds the infamous 19th century true-crime story with a driving rock score.

Heathers: The Musical

Book, music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy

Direction and choreography by Alex Rodriguez

Music direction by Ben Prince

October 30 – November 21, 2020

Z Space, San Francisco

A smash hit from Off-Broadway to the West End and every community theatre in-between, Heathers: The Musical is the darkly delicious story of Veronica Sawyer, the brainy and beautiful misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High: the Heathers. Watch as Veronica falls for the dangerously sexy new kid, J.D., and the fallout as she attempts to climb to the top of the high school food chain. Heathers is a perfect show for 1980’s movie buffs and musical theatre fans alike.

20th Anniversary Gala Concert

Spring 2021

Join company staff, alumni and some of the Bay Area’s most talented performers for a gala event that celebrates the Blood. Sweat. Musicals. that Ray of Light Theatre has brought to San Francisco for the past twenty years. Featuring performances by members of the all-female cast of 2018’s smash hit Jesus Christ Superstar, proceeds from this special event will directly support Ray of Light’s future seasons.

CARRIE the Musical

Music by Michael Gore

Lyrics by Dean Pitchford

Book by Lawrence D. Cohen

Spring/Summer 2021

A.C.T.’s The Strand, San Francisco

Based on Stephen King’s best-selling novel and brought to Broadway in 1988, CARRIE the Musical transports audiences to the small town of Chamberlain, Maine, where we meet Carrie White, a misfit bullied by the popular crowd at school, yet virtually invisible to everyone else. At home, she’s at the mercy of her loving yet cruelly over-protective mother. But Carrie’s just discovered she’s got a special power. And if pushed too far, she’s not afraid to use it.
